Douglas S. Free

Doug Free has practiced law since 1991. For many years, Doug’s practice has focused almost exclusively on assisting medical groups, physicians, and physician-owned entities with health law and business issues. Doug represents solo physician practices, medical groups, surgery centers, and other physician-owned entities all over California.

Since 1997, Doug has served as General Counsel to the California Society of Plastic Surgeons. Many of Doug’s clients utilize Doug as their general counsel and in that capacity confer with Doug on an as-needed basis as issues and opportunities arise.

In addition to his core specialty in the area of healthcare law, Doug has significant experience assisting physicians and medical groups with a wide variety of issues that arise in connection with medical practices, such as physician employment agreements, adding ancillary providers, medical group organization and expansion, commercial leases, physician practice purchase and sales, employment law issues, professional liability insurance issues, and assistance with contracts covering a wide range of topics.

Doug also has extensive experience forming and representing and/or assisting physicians who are interested in buying into or selling ownership interests in surgery centers, imaging centers, DME distribution companies, physical therapy divisions, and other sources of ancillary revenue for physicians and medical practices. In this regard, Doug is very familiar with complex areas of the law such as the Stark regulations and state and federal anti-kickback laws.

Doug has also helped physicians organize and enter into co-management arrangements with hospitals, and he assists physicians who are considering selling their practice and becoming part of a foundation medical group or similar organization.

Doug is a member of the State Bar of California, the American Health Lawyers Association, and the California Society of Healthcare Attorneys. He earned a J.D. degree from Santa Clara University School of Law in 1991 and a B.A. degree from Boston College in 1988.
